Matthew Centrowitz is one of the world’s top 1500m runners.  He exploded onto the world scene in 2011 with victories in the USATF Championships and NCAA T&F Championships followed by a bronze medal winning performance in the IAAF World T&F Championships in Daegu, Korea, the youngest ever American to medal in the event.  He backed this up in 2012 with a close 4th place finish in the Olympic Games in London and a fantastic personal best time of 3:31.96 at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland.  In 2013 Matthew won silver in the IAAF World T&F Championships in Moscow and further lowered his personal best times to 1:44.62 and 3:30.40 in 2015.

Matthew is the son of two-time Olympian Matt Centrowitz. He grew up in Arnold, Maryland where his father is the head track coach at American University.  He was a track star at Broadneck High School in Arnold. His negative split 8:41.55 win in the 2-mile race at the Nike Outdoor Nationals was considered one of the best races in prep history and the best high school time of 2007.  He also set the Maryland state record at 1600 metres at 4:04.09.

Like his father, Matthew ran for the University of Oregon.  Prior to his 2011 success the 22 year old won three Pac 10 titles and was part of the University of Oregon’s memorable 1-2-3 1500m sweep in the 2010 NCAA T&F Championships.  He currently holds the University of Oregon school records in the 1500m and Distance Medley Relay and was the first UO undergrad since Steve Prefontaine to win a USATF Outdoor Championship.  “Matthew has had an enormous impact on the University of Oregon track program,” said Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna. “Oregon has a great tradition in distance running and we are proud of his accomplishments in adding to that tradition.

Matthew turned professional in December 2011, forgoing his final year of NCAA eligibility at the University of Oregon.  He hired world leading management firm PACE Sports Management and signed an endorsement contract with Nike, racing for the Nike Oregon Project.  Matthew is coached by Alberto Salazar and trains with the likes of Olympic Champion Mo Farah and Olympic Games silver medalist Galen Rupp.
